How To Answer Reading Comprehension Questions At The Final?

Many students are unhappy about not having enough time to answer the reading comprehension questions on the exam because:

  • They do not have enough time at all and leave the questions for the next term!!
  • They do not have enough time to read the passages completely!!! And then answer the questions!

Well, first of all it seems that time management is the first step to take! You need to do something to save time for the reading comprehension questions! In the next section we will learn about how to make more time for this part first!

Save Time

So far the time for nearly all final exams at the ILI , student have had one minute for each question. It means if they have for example 60 questions for the exam, the time allowed is about 60 minutes, too. But always remember that not all questions need 1 minute. For example if you can answer the questions of the Vocabulary and Grammar part faster , you can have a lot of time left for the Reading part. Study vocabulary and grammar so well that you can answer their questions in only 20 seconds and save the 40 seconds for the difficult Reading Comprehension section. When you do this, you can have about 10 minute for each of the two passages and with the few simple techniques that I want to teach you here you can be a bit luckier at the final exam this term!

Generally a standard reading comprehension has some unseen words( word that you have not seen so far) that may make you afraid of the passage and the questions. But do not worry because most of the questions are not directly related to those words. Those words are just for making things look difficult!

Do Not Forget These 3 useful techniques:

1- First of all read the first and last sentences of each paragraph carefully.  Then try to answer the questionings! Most of the questions can be answered just by knowing about these sentences.

2-If the first and last sentences did not seem to help, try to find the key (important) words of each question and answers and then go to the passage again and try to find them. Most of the answers are in the sentence with that key word or the sentences before or after the it.

3-Remember that there are some questions that can be answered even without looking at the passage carefully! Here is an example:

-According to the passage we must take care of wild animals

  • Because they are increasing every day.
  • Because They have died since many years ago.
  • To be placed on the endangered species list
  • So that they do not finish in the future

Do you think you need to read the whole passage to answer this

Good luck

It’s not just about the time the problem is the questions mostly the one I hate them I mean conceptional ones…on the other hand regularly a passage in a lower level must be easier than the same type in a higher level but personally I experienced sth repugnance I never forget those damn so-hard passages with very complicated grammar in high 1 and this time in contrast basic-like passages that I’ve never ever envisaged to face such…unluckily when I’m not utterly ready for hard types I see them 😐

    hi sir nice post.
is it a good idea to read the questions first then find the answers in the passage?and could you please help us to guess the meaning of some strange words in the reading? thanks

    • Hossein Mofidi September 15, 2014 at 23:05 - Reply

Hi.. Always remember that a standard reading is kind of guess game! Guessing is guessing ..there is no specific way ! 🙂
