It is one of those cold but nice wintry days and you are out in the country for having fun with your friend or family! Well, it seems a day to remember , but if you are not careful enough , it can be a horrible day of your life and even in some cases can be the last day! Ice covering the water of a river or a lake can be a trap for you in freezing weather ! Here is some advice on what to do before , during and after faling into this natural trap!
Signs of Risky Ice
If you are careful , you can understand where ice is thin and may break under you feet! do not go to places where there is snow or slush ! gray ice means that it is too thin !
And if you fall in ice do these:
Beat the freeze!
Now you are completely under freezing water! When your body’s temperature goes down suddenly, it causes you to gasp for air: it is called “cold shock” You cannot breathe for some seconds because of cold water! So cover your mouth and nose to keep water out of your lungs and if you remain calm, your body will just relax in about minute or so.
When things come back, be fast to avoid freezing to death!
Turn to the direction from which you fell . Get to the hole through which you fell
Do not pull yourself directly up.move like a seal or dolphin and get out of the hole!
When you get out,
Avoid Another Fall!
Do not stand up or you may make another hole and fall again . Stay lying down and roll.
When you are on solid ground,
Do not rub your arms and legs first .Warm the torso(upper part of your body) first. Do not get too close to heat sources like fire or stove too quickly, to avoid dilating vessels and organ failure. Instead find a warm dry place and take off all your clothes (wet clothes in cold weather can kill you in some minutes) then put a blanket around yourself and slowly warm yourself by drinking warm liquid little by little !!
In 1 hour, you are up again to go on! 😎
Have a nice day!
